Funmilayo Akechukwu is a West African curator based in Togo and Ghana. Her work centers the deep contexts of artifacts, sculpture, metalwork and ritual objects of Sub-Saharan Africa. Since 2015 Akechukwu has traveled extensively throughout the Continent conducting research and consulting various African governments and cultural institutions on their efforts at art restitution.
Her most recent work expands upon a series of 2021 forum discussions around the oceanic archive and an emergent diasporic tradition in direct conversation with western Land Art. Funmi is planning a series of experiments across a 300 mile zone in the middle of the Atlantic ocean to investigate what she is calling “The Resonance Field”.
Starting in the fall Akechukwu will start a collaboration with the Glenstone Museum in Potomac, Mary- land, which will assist in research and travel here in the US.
